Larry Altman, Writer/Reporter, Daily Breeze
Larry Altman has covered nearly every major crime and other breaking news stories in the South Bay since 1990. In 2002, Mr. Altman received a Copley Ring of Truth Special Award of Honor for Meritorious Service. He later became the first recipient of The Daily Breeze "Making a Difference" Award. Furthermore, he was named to Presstime magazine's "20 under 40" list of rising newspaper professionals, and in 2007 the Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honored Mr. Altman with a "Distinguished Journalist" award for lifetime achievement. He currently serves as a mentor to younger reporters and leads training seminars for the Daily Breeze and Long Beach Press-Telegram staffers.
Ken Camarco, President, Cooper Notification
Ken Camarco is president of Cooper Notification an operating unit of Cooper Industries, Ltd. Cooper Industries is a global manufacturer of electrical products and tools, with 2006 revenues of $5.2 billion. Headquartered in Houston, Cooper employs approximately 30,000 associates operating in nine divisions globally. The Cooper Notification solutions portfolio of products and services, and designers and deployors to protect, alert and inform personnel anywhere they may be globally. Primary product lines include Wheelock, WAVES, SAFEPATH, and Roam Secure. Prior to taking on his current role, Ken was most recently vice president, Business Systems, a position he held since January 2003. In this role as Chief Information Officer of Cooper Industries, Ken had responsibility for the implementation of Cooper's Enterprise Business System (EBS). Ken's twenty-three year career at Cooper has included a number of engineering, operations, general management, and product management positions within the company at multiple divisions.
David Carlisle, Captain, Department of Public Safety, USC
David Carlisle is a retired police captain from the Whittier Police Department, a mid-sized Southern California law enforcement agency. While serving at the police department, Captain Carlisle was third in command and was responsible for managing an entire division including detectives, crime analysis, forensics (CSI) and all contract law enforcement services provided to Whittier's neighboring city of Santa Fe Springs. Captain Carlisle graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a master's degree in management. He is also a graduate of the Department of Justice's prestigious California Command College and the Delinquency Control Institute (DCI) at USC. After retiring from the Whittier Police Department, Captain Carlisle joined the USC Department of Public Safety as a Captain. He is currently in charge of training, professional standards, accreditation and media relations.
Mike Dougherty, Regional Vice President, Roam Secure, a Division of Cooper Industries
Mike Dougherty is vice president, Business Development for Roam Secure, a unit of Cooper Notification. Mike has been with Roam Secure since 2003 and has worked with a variety of accounts around the country, including the city and county of San Francisco; San Mateo County, CA; Marin County, CA; the Northern California Regional Terrorism Threat Assessment Center; the cities of Baltimore and Philadelphia; the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA.) In education, he has worked with the University of Southern California and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Mike’s professional and volunteer experience also includes a Masters of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and five years experience as a volunteer firefighter and EMT-B in Swarthmore, PA and Montgomery County, MD.
John Giduck, Senior Consultant and Instructor, Archangel Group
John Giduck has a Bachelor's Degree from Penn State and a law degree from the University of Denver. He also earned a Master's Degree in International Affairs, specializing in Russian studies, from the University of Colorado, which included completion of the Russian Culture and Language Program at St. Petersburg State University in Russia. He has traveled extensively throughout Russia and the former Soviet Union, training with Russia's elite Special Forces units for more than 10 years. He is certified through the VITYAZ Special Forces Anti-Terror School to conduct anti-terror training and operations, and is a certified instructor in Russian Special Forces hand-to-hand combat.
Mr. Giduck has trained state and federal law enforcement officers and agents, including DEA, FBI, US Marshal's Service, and SWAT teams throughout the United States. He has served as a consultant on various international and terrorism subjects, as well as a defensive tactics and Russian Organized Crime instructor, for numerous federal agencies, and in the FBI National Academy continued training programs. He currently devotes his professional time to the Archangel Group, a non-profit agency providing anti-terrorism consulting and training to U.S. law enforcement, government and military, part of which includes Mr. Giduck serving as a Special Forces hand-to-hand combat and firearms instructor. As well, he holds several black belts, has been inducted into two international martial arts halls of fame, and is a former U.S. national weightlifting champion.
Mr. Giduck maintains membership in the American Society for Industrial Security, is active in assisting the Special Operations Association through Archangel, and is a lifetime executive member of the British SAS Professional Bodyguard Association. He is a graduate of the FBI Citizen's Academy and holds the highest level expert certification in Homeland Security through the American College of Forensic Examiners International, and is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the American College of Homeland Security. In addition to other published materials and articles on terrorism, Russian organized crime and close quarters tactics, he has recently finished his book, Terror at Beslan: A Russian Tragedy With Lessons for America’s Schools. Currently, Mr. Giduck is traveling the United States speaking and training America’s law enforcement and military on the Beslan School siege.
Robin Gray, Executive Editor, Campus Safety Magazine
Robin has been covering the security and campus law enforcement industries since 1998 and is a specialist in emerging technologies and systems integration. A certified NTS alarm technician, she joined CS in 2005 and has authored award-winning editorial on important campus law enforcement issues such as department funding, officer recruitment and retention, access control, IP video technology, network integration, event management, perimeter security, crime trends, the Clery Act, communication equipment, incident management software and more. In 2007, Robin's efforts lead to CS winning a Maggie for Best Public Safety Trade Publication. The previous year the magazine was nominated for the Most Improved Trade Publication Maggie. She has also moderated panels and Web seminars on topics including mass notification, gangs and on-campus active shooter incidents. Prior to joining CS, Robin was associate editor for the trade publication Security Sales & Integration where she specialized in investigating and researching original story content for the electronic security industry. She obtained her undergraduate degree in history from California State University, Long Beach.
David Lindstrom, Chief Privacy Officer, Pennsylvania State University
Prior to his duties in the areas of privacy, Mr. Lindstrom served as the Associate Director of University Health Services with responsibility for administration of the Health Service and all Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations at Penn State. He is the academic coordinator for all Penn State EMS educational programs offered through the university and is Secretary of the Board of Directors of the All Hazards Consortium, a corporation charged with improving homeland security and all hazards planning for seven states and the District of Columbia. David serves on the Advisory Board of the Medical Reserve Corps of Central Pennsylvania and is the Co-Chair of the Higher Education Working Group of the International Association of Privacy Professionals. In November 1996, David was the on-scene EMS incident commander for a sniper shooting incident on the Penn State campus. In addition to daily EMS operations, David was in charge of EMS operations for all special events, including the 105,000 seat Penn State Beaver Stadium. In 1970, David was commissioned as a Combat Engineer and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1983.
Lawrence Manion, Chief of Police, Los Angeles School Police Dept.
Chief Lawrence E. Manion enlisted in the United States Army in 1968, and was trained by the United States Navy and certified as an underwater MARK-5 Hardhat/Scuba Diver. Chief Manion completed his three years of honorable service in Korea with the 142nd Military Police Detachment. Prior to assuming command responsibilities with the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD), Chief Manion amassed nearly 30 years of service with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). During his tenure with the LAPD, Chief Manion performed a multitude of assignments that included: Officer-In-Charge of the Oakwood Task Force Gang Unit; Adjutant to the Support Services Bureau Police Administrator; Officer-In-Charge of Valley Jail Section; and Watch Commander for Valley Traffic Division. After retiring at the rank of Lieutenant II from the LAPD in September 2000, Chief Manion served with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Bureau of Investigation, for two years prior to being selected as a Commander for the LASPD. In October 2003, Manion was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief. On August 11, 2005, Manion was appointed as the Interim Chief of Police. On September 20, 2006, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Roy Romer and the LAUSD Board of Education appointed Manion as the LASPD Chief of Police.
Chief Manion commands the second largest school police department in the United States. The LASPD employs 361 sworn police officers, 120 civilian school safety officers and 41 civilian support staff members. There are over 900 schools and administrative facilities located throughout the 703 square miles encompassing the Los Angeles Unified School District. The men and women of the Department respond to approximately 75,000 calls for service yearly, and provide police services to nearly 1,000,000 students and 88,000 District employees.
Chief Manion holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from the University of Redlands. He graduated from the FBI National Academy; LAPD Command Development Program; and United States Army Enlisted Command Leadership School. Chief Manion is a member of the Police Officers Association of Los Angeles County and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Phylis Miquel, Global Education Solutions Manager, Cisco Systems
Phylis Miquel is the Global Education Solutions Manager for Cisco Systems. In this role, she is responsible for understanding the IP technology trends in education including those for curriculum, instructional technology, facilities and safety. She works directly with organization across the world to develop IP based solutions that address specific issues and ensure education oganizations maximize their existing IP technology infrastructure. Phylis has been in the networking technology industry for over 15 years, the last 8 with Cisco. Prior to Cisco, Phylis managed marketing programs at several networking technology companies including, SightPath, Bay Networks and Digital Products. Phylis holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts. She serves on the emerging technology committee for COSN and is a regular speaker at industry events such as NECC, Educause and FETC.
Philip L. Mullendore, Director, Institute for Campus Safety
Philip Mullendore is a 36 year law enforcement veteran. and holds a Bachelor, Masters in Criminal Justice from CSU Long Beach and a Doctor of Criminology from August Vollmer University. His career includes 8 years as a San Bernardino County Deputy sheriff, and 25 years as a Chief of Campus Police and Safety for both an urban K-12 School district and an urban community college. He has been an elected member of a public school district Board of Trustees and has twice been the President of the California College and University Police Chiefs Association He is the current Executive Director of the CaliforniaCollege and University Police Chiefs Association. Dr. Mullendore was a paid consultant to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services to develop the School Security Course as mandated by SB 1626. Dr, Mullendore has consulted with school and college district and has presented both the California and National version of the School Security Course throughout the nation.
Bart Peluso, Wireless Broadband Product & Solutions Marketing, Motorola
Bart Peluso manages product marketing for Motorola's wireless broadband portfolio in North America. Prior to joining Motorola, Bart directed marketing for MeshNetworks, Inc., the start-up company that conceived and introduced Mesh Networking to municipalities. Bart has 17 years of wireless product experience and teaches as an adjunct instructor at Florida Southern College in Orlando Florida.
Art Ruditsky, President/Owner, P.T.S.C.
The founder and owner of P.T.S.C., Art Ruditsky was a Lieutenant with the Los Angeles Police Department who retired after 30 years of service. Art's previous assignments include Mobile Field Force Leader, Officer In Charge (O.I.C.) of the Rampart Specialized Enforcement Group (which included the Gang Unit, Special Problems Unit, Hype Unit and Vice Unit), O.I.C. of Hollywood Vice, O.I.C. of Narcotics Group's Asset Forfeiture Unit, and many other assignments throughout a wide range of L.A.P.D.'s diverse units and divisions. Art Ruditsky worked in seven different patrol divisions such as Hollywood, Rampart and Newton. Art also served at the Los Angeles Police Academy as an instructor and Officer In Charge of several units. For approximately twenty years, he was one of the Los Angeles Police Department's primary leadership instructors teaching in seven Department Schools. Art has a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice/Public Administration from California State University at Los Angeles. Art served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps with tours in the United States, Viet Nam and Japan. Through out his career with the L.A.P.D. and the U.S.M.C., Art has been involved with the training of law enforcement officers and has drawn on his vast experience to develop P.T.S.C.'s distinctive curriculum. Art has trained literally thousands of law enforcement officers throughout the western United States, including the Los Angeles Police Academy, Federal, State, and County municipal agencies and innumerable police departments. Art's areas of expertise include leadership training, officer survival, crowd control, critical incident management, personnel issues and officer discipline, tactical operations and multi-agency coordination.
Dean Zanone, Sergeant (Ret.), Cisco Systems
For the last 10 years of his 27 year career Sgt. Dean Zanone (Seal Beach Police Department ret) has been meeting with public and private information managers and fellow emergency responders to discuss IP based public safety applications and network capabilities. Since his retirement from Public Safety in 2003 he has been working with Cisco Systems to research, evaluate and develop IP standards based technologies directed at benefiting Public Safety professionals.
